Educational programmesGallery and scenic programmes

The Centre organises various educational programmes – lectures on folk costumes, seminars on their scenic application, workshops and schools.

Workshop for making and repairing costumes and instruction in traditional textile skills

In the summer workshop the participants gain theoretical and practical knowledge in making and repairing costumes and acquire traditional textile skills. The workshop is intended for costume designers, dressers and dancers in folk ensembles, leaders of folklore groups in kindergartens and primary schools, Croatian expatriates and individual enthusiasts. The programme is implemented in co-operation with the Croatian Emigration Institute.

In the theoretical part of instruction basic ethnological information is provided on folk costumes, types of weaving, lacing, embroidery or application of various adornments. In the practical part of instruction the tailoring of folk costumes is taught, as well as embroidery techniques, application of characteristic ornaments, traditional weaving techniques, lacing, knitting, restoration and maintenance. Depending on their personal preferences, course takers are divided into smaller groups to specialise in particular skills.

Seminar on the use of popular dresses on the folklore scene

The cycle provides basic ethnological information on the traditional attire of particular regions, teaches how to correctly select, wear, maintain and care for folk costumes, explains their visual qualities and various scenic potentials. The theoretical part consists of lectures on folk costumes, whereas in the practical part, along with expert guidance and demonstration by field associates from the respective regions, it is taught how costumes are practically used, worn and tended in a region. The curriculum is replenished by performances of folklore groups, book presentations, visits to exhibitions, museums or collections. The Centre also assists a course of study in traditional Croatian dressing at the Folklore School within the Croatian Emigration Institute.

Workshop of traditional hairstyles

Traditional female hairstyles make an interesting and peculiar part of the traditional Croatian cultural heritage. A workshop, which operates within individual folklore events (The Gjakovo Embroidery, The Vinkovci Autumn Festival, folklore festivals), demonstrates various types of hairstyling practised in the regions of Croatia.

The project of applying traditional motifs and handicraft to modern fashion

The project of applying traditional motifs and textile handicraft to modern clothes, textile and souvenirs incorporates traditional elements into the modern fashion trends, everyday life, housing, interior design. The objective of the project is to turn out an authentic modern Croatian product featuring the elements of tradition.
